Fritz und Erich Sass, zwei Brüder, deren Leben bisher von Misserfolgen geprägt war, entwickeln eine unkonventionelle Methode, um Banktresore zu knacken: Sie nutzen einen Schneidbrenner. Ihr erster großer Erfolg kommt, als sie durch einen eigens gegrabenen Tunnel in die Stahlkammer einer Bank eindringen und 179 Schließfächer ausräumen. Obwohl der Kriminalkommissar Zach und sein Assistent Lück ihnen hartnäckig auf den Fersen ist, gelingt es nicht, ihnen konkrete Straftaten nachzuweisen. Doch als die politische Landschaft in Deutschland von den Nazis übernommen wird, wird es den Brüdern zu heiß, und sie fliehen nach Dänemark. Doch selbst dort finden sie keinen dauerhaften Schutz vor ihrer Vergangenheit.
