About this listen
The complete space opera series for fans of Babylon 5, Deep Space 9, and kick-ass action sci-fi.
Commander Dalton Reeves is a maverick officer with exceptional genetic strength and a dark family history—a history that will come back to haunt him.
Punished for exceeding orders one time too many, he’s packed off to the "The Abyss"—the most dangerous space station in the galaxy. But a posting that should have led to five years in obscurity will propel Reeves into the center of an interstellar war against a long-forgotten alien adversary with a bitter grudge.
With the six realms on the brink of all-out war, Reeves must face his demons and be prepared to go to any lengths to become the warrior and the leader the galaxy desperately needs him to be.
Dive into this epic space-opera science-fiction series, set in a vivid multi-species universe. It’s filled with danger, intrigue, and drama played out against the tense backdrop of a looming war versus an ancient and bitter alien enemy.

clear reading, no inconsistencies with character

The narrator was mostly very good with his character voices and the general narrative. Sometimes his accents are a bit painful but it does help to differentiate between the alien races. He doesn't try too hard with female voices but does enough to make them distinctive.
Story
The story kicks off with a military officer ordered to take command of an underfunded and under resourced space station as a punishment for insubordination. He is likeable and heroic with a dark background that adds a few twists. His loyal sidekick first officer is interesting enough to be more than just a plus 1 and the author is able to show how they are good friends as well as colleagues.
Supporting characters are adequate and the main villain was just about interesting enough to keep me engaged although there is nothing especially original about any of them.
Early on, the story made me think of Babylon 5 a lot but only as a framework. It doesn't copy an existing story, but it was very reminiscent of the show especially when describing the meetings of ambassadors and the terrible slum areas. Over the course of the books the story becomes larger and on a grander scale.
There is a reasonable amount of backstory and enough detail to flesh out the world in the story. Character development is a bit weak and I found the repetitive depiction of graphic violence a bit over the top.
Summary
Its generic space opera for the most part but enjoyable and moves along nicely.
A kind of Babylon 5 meets Deep Space 9 Space Opera
