About this listen
Viscount Derriford likes to keep a low profile. He avoids ton parties and the ladies who frequent them whenever possible, preferring to spend time with his fellow bachelors. A predictable, undemanding existence suits him perfectly. Marriage has never been part of his plans; he is convinced he could never make any woman happy. However, when his aunt dies, leaving him a property in Somerset, this safe, untrammelled existence is threatened by a condition attached to his inheritance. He must accept all invitations proffered by the local gentry.
Miss Mary Coker is a spinster fast approaching her 30th birthday. Having rejected the only offer of marriage ever offered her when she was nineteen, she has long ago given up on the prospect of a home of her own. She is resigned to a life supporting her Mama and siblings. When Lord Derriford arrives in the neighbourhood, she soon notices his awkwardness in dealing with the fairer sex and determines to try and make him more comfortable.
She discovers there is rather more to him than meets the eye.

The book, Derriford is beautifully constructed and draws you into the story making you really care about the characters. Jenny Hambly certainly does her homework on the regency period and is a superb storyteller.
Derry and Mary are the main characters in the book and they are just perfect together. Derry has inherited his aunt’s property and is a neighbour to Mary and her family and though Derry is very awkward in conversing with young unmarried ladies, he is drawn to Mary’s kind heart and practical skills and she draws Derry out. He in turn shows that underneath his difficulties that he is an intelligent and brave man and the comfort that they both feel in each other’s company starts to awaken a romance. There is also an underlying mystery that connects both the houses and this adds an extra dimension to the story. The minor characters in the book are well formed, especially Mary’s family the Cokers. The determination of Derry at the end of the book was fun and it left me with a satisfied smile on my face.
As always Helen Taylor’s narration is spot on and the story just comes alive. She is excellent at male and female characters and always gives the right tone of voice for the characters she portrays.
