Johann Feichtl lehnte an einem Baume und schaute zu, wie seine Herde sich gütlich tat. Die Kühe blieben ruhig auf ihrem Platze und fraßen gewissenhaft links und rechts ab, was sie erreichen konnten; sie bewegten sich nur, wenn die Arbeit getan war, und traten dann ruhig einen halben Schritt vor, um von neuem anzufangen. Mit den Schweinen war das anders. Die fuhren hin und her, rissen hier und dort etwas vom Boden weg, blieben nirgends stehen, und wenn eines sah, dass das andere einen Fund machte, stürzte es grunzend hin und suchte es zu vertreiben. Sie waren beständig in Unruhe, voll Neid, und nicht einmal während des Fressens konnten sie es unterlassen, giftig herumzuschauen, ob es nicht einem anderen besser ginge.
