Kurz vor seiner Inhaftierung durch die Polizei, gelingt es John Hector McFarlane in die Baker Street zu gelangen, um Sherlock Holmes um Hilfe zu bitten. Der einsam lebende Baumeister Jonas Oldacre wurde ermordet und alles spricht dafür, dass der kurz zuvor von Oldacre zu seinem Alleinerben gemachte McFarlane der Täter ist. Doch dieser beteuert verzweifelt seine Unschuld. Holmes glaubt ihm und beginnt mit den Ermittlungen. Da taucht ein weiteres Indiz für McFarlanes Schuld auf, doch findet es sich an einer Stelle, die Holmes bereits intensiv untersucht hatte. Um das Rätsel zu lösen, muss Feuer in Oldacres Haus gelegt werden...
