 Winter 1915, Erster Weltkrieg: Der junge österreichische Leutnant Baron Bagge wird bei einem Aufklärungsritt an die russische Front in ein Gefecht verwickelt und verletzt, kann aber eine nahe gelegene ungarische Garnisonsstadt noch erreichen, wo er freundlich aufgenommen wird und schließlich sogar heiratet. Doch gestaltet sich das Leben in dem vom Krieg scheinbar völlig unberührten Städtchen zunehmend rätselhaft - bis Bagge sich plötzlich dort wiederfindet, wo das Gefecht eingangs stattgefunden hat.
