About this listen

For the past 50 years, Paul Theroux has travelled to the far corners of the Earth - to China, Africa, the Pacific Islands, Russia, and elsewhere.

In Deep South, he turns his gaze to a region much closer to his home. Travelling through North and South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas, he writes of the stunning landscapes he discovers - the deserts, the mountains, the Mississippi - and, above all, the lives of the people he meets.

A very well narrated account of Theroux's latest work, always an absolute pleasure. Refreshing to hear "Mr. Paul" stay within the confines of America, and surprising at how it so resembles the Africa of Theroux's Dark Star Safari. I do wish somebody would commission the audio version of Patagonian Express

Would you try another book written by Paul Theroux or narrated by John McDonough?

I love the travel books by Theroux. But I would never buy another book narrated by McDonough

What will your next listen be?

A history of the Arab conquests

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of John McDonough?

Don't know

Was Deep South worth the listening time?

No

Any additional comments?

Not a travel book. Rather a longwinded commentary about the misery of the rural South

Shaky voiced narrator with a weak story

Unfocused, but in a good way. Theroux clearly enjoyed his trip and you will too.

Long, winding and satisfying

Everything Theroux writes is so thought provoking. The research undertaking is greatly appreciated. Have listened twice so far and read the book too .

Magnificent. Always a brilliant story and so descriptive

Great performance from John McDonough. Still very relevant today, and a great inspiration for going on a road-trip now.

Good book, great performance, can be a bit slow
