About this listen

There are many ruined castles in Scotland. One such lies outside the village of Drim. Hamish begins to hear reports that this castle is haunted and lights have been seen there at night, but he assumes it's some children or maybe the local lads going there to smoke pot, or, worse, inject themselves with drugs. Hamish says to his policeman, Charlie 'Clumsy' Carson, that they will both spend a night there.

The keening wind explains the ghostly noises, but when Charlie falls through the floor, Hamish finds the body of a dead man propped up in a corner of the cellar. After Charlie is airlifted to the hospital, Chief Detective Inspector Blair arrives to investigate the body, but there is none to be found. Dismissed as a drunk making up stories, Hamish has to find and identify the body and its killer before the "ghost" can strike again.

Great listening

Really great story and David Monteath reads Hamish Macbeth stories brilliantly. The description of the setting for the story really comes to life you can really see it.

Comical and theatrical at the same time.

Really enjoyed this. Humour and suspense, great listen. Hamish is an incredible sleuth character

Very good

Well drawn characters, brilliantly read by David Monteith. A strong storey line with old, loved, characters developed and new ones introduced. The reader is in the midst of the Highland weather with Hamish Macbeth both baddies and the climate.

Hamish is my go to friend!

As ever, i really enjoyed this gentle comedy with a mystery adding value. David Monteath has the best voice for these stories, thoroughly recommend this whole series.

Synopsis is incorrect!

Another excellent Hamish Macbeth story...but the synopsis is incorrect. Charlie DOESN'T get taken to hospital in helicopter (he's not really injured), and it's Superintendent Daviot who arrives at the scene (not Blair). Don't know who wrote the summary, but they mustn't have read the book first!

Gentle murder

Not a thriller, but has its twists and turns. Easy listening. Good narrator. Lovely voice.

Another murder in the highlands

Another great Hamish Macbeth story. They ate short enough to listen in one sitting, but long enough to feel satisfied. Wonderful characters. Brilliantly performed.

Great entertainment

This story just kept on giving. I really enjoyed it. If you know M C Beaton, you know that you will have a good murder to solve, with plenty of fun along the way but this could have been finished a couple of times and there was still a bit more story to tell.

Beautifully read by David Monteath.

MacBeth is back on the best!

Another spell binding Adventure with Hamish. I took delivery yesterday and could not stop listening until I finished the book. Is Banished life coming together at last? You be the judge! MC, another winner. David Monteath is to be congratulated on his atmospheric description of the book. Brilliant.

Hamish goes from strength to strength

Any additional comments?

Much as I enjoy Angela Raisin, Hamish Macbeth remains my favourite Beaton character. He once again outthinks the brains of Strathbane Police as he deals with deaths occurring after smuggling is suspected off the Sutherland coast, plus the continuing departmental struggles between his superiors, with the help of a new sidekick. Priscilla and Elspeth appear briefly but Hamish remains a bachelor, notwithstanding the efforts of the ladies of Lochdubh!
