This is a properly thrilling whodunnit in two parts, the long set up, and then a beautiful unravelling of the secret. It’s set in the last months of the war in Italy and I guess it’s highly biographical. It’s absolutely wonderful.

I started to read this with a little bit of trepidation because I wasn’t certain whether a story set in a prisoner of war camp would be something I would enjoy. But as I made my way through the book, the story enfolded me thoroughly. It was beautifully written, and moved at very fast pace. I’m pretty good at guessing the outcomes of detective novels, but this had me going to the very last page.
The narrator‘s voice was very easy to listen to, and added a real weight to the words he was reading.
Very enjoyable read.
