I was often irritated with the narrator, her attempts with the different accents sounded terrible, the intonation seemed rather odd, and she mispronounces some not uncommon words, such as "grimace" (she pronounces it grim-ace). Not an enjoyable listening experience, unfortunately.

I persevered with this because I love the story but oh wow the narrator tried my patience. Why the publishers decided an American voice was the perfect vehicle for a very English crime, with English and European characters, in Berlin after WW2 is beyond me. She gave it her best shot but listening to her 'Cockney' was painful and the attempts to do an English colonel had me wincing. I wish this could be re-recorded with someone better fitted, voice-wise. If you can stand the cringe factor, go ahead and listen. It's still a great story!

No- the narration spoiled it for me.

How could the performance have been better?

I do not understand why it was felt necessary to have an American narrating when the characters were, in the main, British. Her pronounciation was poor and her attempts at a British accent ludicrous. I persevered until the end of the book but will not buy another audio book of M M Kaye's novels, I will just stick to the written word in future- which I know I will enjoy!

A very good story but ruined in places by the reader’s American accent. For a story set in a time of Received Pronunciation English, it would have been better with an English accent. There were several mispronunciations of words which were somewhat cringe-worthy! A shame.
