Welcome to Rook Hall. The stage is set. The players are ready. By night’s end, a murderer will be revealed.

Ex-detective Jackson Brodie is staving off a bad case of midlife malaise when he is called to a sleepy Yorkshire town, and the seemingly tedious matter of a stolen painting. But one theft leads to another, including the disappearance of a valuable Turner from Burton Makepeace, home to Lady Milton and her family. Once a magnificent country house, Burton Makepeace has now partially been converted into a hotel, hosting Murder Mystery weekends.

As paying guests, a vicar, an ex-army officer, impecunious aristocrats, and old friends converge, we are treated a fiendishly clever mystery; one that pays homage to the masters of the genre—from Agatha Christie to Dorothy Sayers.

Brilliantly inventive, with all of Atkinson’s signature wit, wordplay and narrative brio, Death at the Sign of the Rook may be Jackson Brodie’s most outrageous and memorable case yet.

'How delicious to have Jackson Brodie back, this time in a story that starts off in Agatha Christie's world but soon becomes a landscape that could only have been crafted from the pen of the incomparable Kate Atkinson' Ian Rankin

'Christie would be proud . . . I defy you not to snort with laughter as the novel progresses to its farcical denouement. Atkinson is brilliant' Observer

'Sharp, droll and knowing as ever, Atkinson has huge fun with the set-up; the supporting cast is terrific, and the rueful Brodie, ever more mindful of the passing years, feels like an old friend.' Guardian

Welcome back Jackson

Like many others I’m a huge Kate Atkinson fan, Jackson Brodie books are such fun, many laugh out loud moments, but also so observant of people’s little foibles, such a perceptive writer, a joy, not so long until the next one please

Both Entertaining and amusing (and Jason Isaacs is excellent)

Kate Atkinson has written yet another brilliant Jackson Brody novel. The characters and the plot are both intriguing and amusing, in fact I chuckled all the way through this.
Jason Isaacs rendering of the characters is superb. All in all, one of my favourite listens for a long time.

Kate Atkinson Embraces Her Inner Tom Sharpe

It's a light hearted crime yarn which grows increasingly chaotic.
Put me in mind of the mad world created for Porterhouse Blue.
Nice to see JB given another airing.
I get the sense the author enjoys these as a diversion from her more complex literature.

Great fun

I loved the mix of characters and how the story came together. Jackson Brodie seems to have mellowed as he's grown older, his life isn't as tumultuous as it was. Jason Isaacs' narration brought so much humour to the story which I doubt I'd have found in the printed version. A very enjoyable book.

I'd forgotten how funny Kate Atkinson can be

I loved this book. Jason Isaacs did a fantastic job of bringing all the characters to life. Lady Milton and the vicar were wonderful and properly funny. It was also quite moving at times. if you wanted you could take time to admire the interwoven levels of crime story within a crime story but I was having too much fun just enjoying the ride. A pleasure to have Jackson and Reggie back.

Another sublime addition to the series

KA does it again. So funny, so heartbreaking, so human. Easily the best writer working today. Wry, intelligent, witty and absurd. She nails it. Loved the story, loved the characters, thoroughly miserable that it’ll be another few years before Jackson rides again.

exceptional narrating, good story.

Not sure what I was expecting and sorry to say not heard of Jackson Brodie. Jason Isaac narrates this story so well, the general humour and delivery is exceptional. The characters were great, each another story in themselves. I'm not sure if I followed the story completely but just the way its written is so entertaining.
