Welcome to Rook Hall. The stage is set. The players are ready. By night’s end, a murderer will be revealed.

Ex-detective Jackson Brodie is staving off a bad case of midlife malaise when he is called to a sleepy Yorkshire town, and the seemingly tedious matter of a stolen painting. But one theft leads to another, including the disappearance of a valuable Turner from Burton Makepeace, home to Lady Milton and her family. Once a magnificent country house, Burton Makepeace has now partially been converted into a hotel, hosting Murder Mystery weekends.

As paying guests, a vicar, an ex-army officer, impecunious aristocrats, and old friends converge, we are treated a fiendishly clever mystery; one that pays homage to the masters of the genre—from Agatha Christie to Dorothy Sayers.

Brilliantly inventive, with all of Atkinson’s signature wit, wordplay and narrative brio, Death at the Sign of the Rook may be Jackson Brodie’s most outrageous and memorable case yet.

'How delicious to have Jackson Brodie back, this time in a story that starts off in Agatha Christie's world but soon becomes a landscape that could only have been crafted from the pen of the incomparable Kate Atkinson' Ian Rankin

'Christie would be proud . . . I defy you not to snort with laughter as the novel progresses to its farcical denouement. Atkinson is brilliant' Observer

'Sharp, droll and knowing as ever, Atkinson has huge fun with the set-up; the supporting cast is terrific, and the rueful Brodie, ever more mindful of the passing years, feels like an old friend.' Guardian

Welcoming Jackson Brody back with open arms metaphorically! This was a fabulous story woven with humour as well as a real thriller with a few mysteries and corpses thrown in for good measure. Anyone who is a fan of the mystery thriller genre and particularly Agatha Christie enjoy all of the knowing nods and tributes to well worn tropes. Kate Atkinson has outdone herself this time and now the mystery is will: Jackson ever return to us?

Sheer delight

This is what an audiobook should be; a brilliant story, varied characters, interesting information and all beautifully narrated. I was sorry when it ended..

Absorbing and very funny

Another Jackson Brody novel that does not disappoint. On contrary, surprising, great characters and story. And of course read with gusto by Jason Isaacs

Great story and preformance

As usual, the reader was excellence itself. As good as all the previous books by Kate Atkinson,

every word

Kate Atkinson creates wonderful characters and Jason Isaacs is a brilliant narrator which made this a perfect listen.
I laughed out loud several times, particularly when Lady Milton strode onto the scene and also with the banter between Jackson and Reggie.
I just love the way everything comes together....well nearly everything ...leaving hope for another installment...

Love Kate Atkinson, love Jason Isaacs and love Jackson Brodie!

Thank you Kate Atkinson for writing another wonderful Jackson Brodie book. This one is just as good as the last ones. The character of the Dowager is pure comic genius and had me laugh out loud. The book is brilliantly read. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable listen!

Loved it!

Entertaining although a few more characters than necessary, which made the audible version confusing at times. Narration superb

Not enough Jackson

Enjoyed this, although KA seems to throw in a lot of characters that are not necessarily pertinent. This can be especially confusing when listening to rather than reading a book. Still, Isaacs did a great job with narration and bits of thdd ed text made me smile, which does not happen often in cosy crime!

Engaging, if confusing in places

I have adored several of Kate Atkinson’s novels but this was a huge disappointment. It never seemed to get anywhere, had no strong plot lines, a rambling padded out narrative, a big cast of disparate and unattractive characters and - I’m afraid - a terrible narrator who gabbles in a sort of jerky voice. It tried hard to be funny in places without success. What Jackson Brodie was doing in this incoherent story I’m not sure.

A big disappointment
