I struggled to finish this one. Angus King's narration was solid, Kate Bracken's really put a downer on the whole experience, I'm afraid. Unless I feel an urge to start listening to books about a whiny teenager's angst and depression (where I think her reading style would be well suited), I think I'll be avoiding her in the future. Of course, it is always possible that that was the desired effect - in which case, well done Kate! But I'll still be avoiding her... to be on the safe side.

Reasonable story, 50% excellent narration

I hadn't read this author before but took a punt on it in the sales and was gripped by both the story line and the performance

Took a punt on this book and it had me gripped

You know enough about the synopsis - but I can add that the narration is spot-on, and the use of the two narrators works perfectly. CB's books are usually a treat because they are so intelligently written and engaging in their use of language, this one is too. More please - including all the missing ones from CB's back catalogue.

Tiwsty turny literature

An intriguing and engaging mystery with quite a few surprises. I usually guess the plots but this one did keep me guessing...

Excellent story, well narrated.

Would you try another book written by Chris Brookmyre or narrated by Angus King and Kate Bracken ?

Unlikely. The narrative was not engaging despite the good story.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The narrative needs more forward motion. It feels too slow and always waiting for something to happen.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Make the character a little less whiny.

Do you think Dead Girl Walking needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

The story has been played out and the secret revealed.

Good basic story but narrative not engaging

This is my second Jack Parlybane novel. Not sure I will do any more, too many books and too little time to follow just one character through the same but slightly different crime thrillers.

I like the well drawn characters, plus it was an interesting storyline of rock band prostitution, rock chicks, lesbians, drugs and human trafficking. Sounds rather awful now but did make a good story.

Narration was good although there were a few odd accents, when he spoke one character then realised he was using the wrong accent....Scottish to Eastern European all in one sentence! However it did not detract from the whole.

Very good Parlabane tale. Why won't this bloody app auto capitalise.
Great audio performance. One more word.

Not my favourite.

I don't know why but for some illogical reason I wasn't looking forward to this book. When it's turn came I started to listen reluctantly, and, of course, loved it. The story moves along at a cracking pace. There's intrigue, lies, dirty dealing, double crossing and danger aplenty. The narrators do a great job bringing the characters to life. All in all an excellent, well thought out tale with a number of complex threads, which come together to a weave a fabulous tapestry. This was my first Chris Brookmyre story, not having read or listened to any Jack Parlabane or Jasmine Sharp books previously. What a loser I am! I shall be seeking out these series now and can't wait to get stuck into them. How I've managed to let such a great author elude me for so long is a mystery, (albeit one that's not worth writing about). Now that I've found him, I'll be sticking by his side forever more. I highly recommend you join me on my Chris Brookmyre journey of discovery. You can thank me later!
