Die beiden römischen Provinzen Ober- und Untergermanien sind das Ergebnis derjenigen Niederlage der römischen Waffen und der römischen Staatskunst unter der Regierung des Augustus, welche früher geschildert worden ist. Die ursprüngliche Provinz Germanien, die das Land vom Rhein bis zur Elbe umfasste, hat nur zwanzig Jahre vom ersten Feldzug der Drusus, 742 d. St. = 12 v. Chr., bis zur Varusschlacht und dem Falle Alisos 762 d. St. = 9 n. Chr. bestanden.
Theodor Mommsen erhielt als erster Deutscher 1902 den Nobelpreis für Literatur.
