Das Schicksal schnappt in Form des Krokodils zu und verschluckt Iwan Matwejewitsch, der dieses Ereignis zum Glück überlebt. Anstatt an seiner Befreiung zu arbeiten, richtet er es sich im Innern des Krokodils behaglich ein und schmiedet Pläne, wie er den neu gewonnenen Ruhm möglichst geschäftstüchtig für sich nutzen kann.
