About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
This audiobook includes a bonus conversation between the author and Jack Carr.
The Sunday Times best-selling series returns - and Orphan X faces his most challenging mission ever....
Evan Smoak is a man with many identities and a challenging past. As Orphan X, he was a government assassin for the off-the-books Orphan Program. After he broke with the program, he adopted a new name and a new mission - the Nowhere Man, helping the most desperate in their times of trouble.
Having just survived an attack on his life, and the complete devastation of his base of operations, as well as his complicated (and deepening) relationship with his neighbour, Mia Hall, Evan isn't interested in taking on a new mission.
But one finds him anyway.
Aragon Urrea is a kingpin of a major drug-dealing operation in South Texas. He's also the patron of the local area - supplying employment in legitimate operations, providing help to the helpless, a rough justice to the downtrodden, and a future to a people normally with little hope. He's complicated - a not completely good man, who does bad things for often good reasons.
However, for all his money and power, he is helpless when one of the most vicious cartels kidnaps his innocent 18-year-old daughter, spiriting her away into the armoured complex that is their headquarters in Mexico. With no other way to rescue his daughter, he turns to the Nowhere Man.
Now not only must Evan figure out how to get into the impregnable fortress of a heavily armed, deeply paranoid cartel leader, but he must decide if he should help a very bad man - no matter how just the cause.

Riveting, engaging and moving
The depth to and mastery of Greg Hurwotz’s Orphan X series keeps getting better. The emotional exploration of the characters interwoven with fast pace, spell bindingly brilliant action makes Dark Horse more than a thrilling listen, it is a thought provoking exploration into who you are. Powerful, engaging and very clever. Scott Brick’s narration was as phenomenal as ever.

A bit laboured
I have enjoyed the Orphan X to this point. However, there was too much navel gazing on the ethics of being in a cartel and parenthood and begin in a relationship. It made it all very slow and laboured. Not my favourite Orphan X book.

Dark Horse - darker than ever
Joey, Mia, ball bearings within ball bearings, the commandments, vodka, a floating bed, tech that makes your brain hurt, magical fighting, vengeance, loneliness, villains and a hero of a new order. These are the ingredients that make each book in the Orphan X series a rich meal with fantastic plotting, 3D characters and a story arc that keeps you listening into the early hours.
Just go for it.

Well performed and interesting
Scott Brick is his usual excellent self in this Orphan X performance.
The story is much better than the last Orphan X book where he found some of his family. This is more a return to form for the uber capable loner living to a set of standards.
The plot is a decent one. Sometimes as preposterous as other books. Sufficiently different to be interesting. As always Hurwitz dwells on technical details. This adds realism but is a bit gun porn.
Characters are sufficiently distinctive. Joey is an annoying teenager but growing up. X has problems dealing with it in a well written way.
Some parts of the finale get a little silly but this is Orphan X. It's all quite silly. Overall I enjoyed this book.

Another great listen
This book is slightly different to the previous ones, a bit more intellectual and emotional but still action packed. It is great getting more into the past of Orphan X. Looking forward to the next one!

Just as good as all the rest!
I was slightly worried this one wasn't going to live up to the rest after reading some of the negative comments but I was pleasantly surprised. Amazing book, amazing characters and amazing narrator! 👏
