“I’ve got four girls under eight and this is brilliant. It’s a really handy book for dads, showing how to build a raft or an insect trap. I built a Viking boat recently out of wood. It’s a very good antidote to the iPad’ Jimmy Doherty, Daily Express
I listen to audio books mostly while I'm cycling to and from work, and the last few days have been noticeably slower cycling than usual because this was such an engaging and relaxing book to listen to.
If you're looking for an autobiography, which is what the Audible sample suggests then you will get some parts like that, but the majority is about different Dadventures, and I never knew Alex was such a woodsman. He has some great ideas for activities that he's learnt throughout his life, which he describes so well that you can almost see him doing these things with his kids. Each of these activities is followed by an anecdote involving the Dadventure in question, some were heart-wrenching, others were wonderful, and every one of them brought me back to similar times in my life, I'm sure they will you too.
His narration was also fantastic, I am not saying that he is as refined and as practised as Michael Kramer here, this is Alex's first book and Michael Kramer in my eyes is the best narrator in the business, but he does a perfect Jürgen Gröbler impression (I've met Jürgen Gröbler, trust me, it's uncanny), his flow is perfect, he brings so much emotion to the anecdotes (understandably) and finally (one of the most important things for narration imo) his volume is constant throughout the book showing that he's been setup well with his recording equipment and isn't looking away from the microphone and changing the volume a noticable amount.
I loved the Dadventure ideas and have already done a few (some I had done variations of before, but many were new or things that I haven't done since childhood), but my absolute favourite bits were his anecdotes.
Best of luck with this Alex, Andrew
p.s. I have already told him that I can't wait for the sequel!
