About this listen

How do you keep the people you care about safe from enemies you can’t remember? Ten years ago, Nate Garrett awoke on a cold warehouse floor with no memory of his past and the only clues to his identity were a piece of paper with his name on it and a propensity toward magic. Now he’s a powerful sorcerer and a successful thief for hire, but it turns out that those who stole his memories aren’t done with him yet. When they cause a job to go bad, threatening a sixteen-year-old girl, Nate swears to protect her. But with his enemies closing in and the barrier holding back his memories beginning to crumble, Nate is forced to confront his forgotten life in the hope of stopping an enemy he can’t remember. Crimes Against Magic is a dark, fast-paced urban fantasy torn between modern-day London and fifteenth-century France.

Soooo good!

I love the story! I love the characters. I love the reader! Unexpected stuff happened. I love the idea about living through the centuries, I listened to this one and immediately bought the second one, which is as good! Waiting for the next book...

Could have been better...

The narrator needs to learn new tricks, every female's voice was the same. That made some parts of the book hard to understand if you weren't paying attention. The characters were interesting and the twist on old God's and mythical figures actually being sorcerers is inspired. However both the characters and the storyline could have been developed more .

Disappointing but worth a read.

The story itself isn't horrendous, but there are a few issues.
- The main character isn't likeable, he's meant to be "badass magic James bond with a grey morality" but he just comes across as a douche.
- There's a lot of action, but not much happens.
- The explanatory information seems forced, people ask some really obvious questions so he can go off on an explanation.

The narrator doesn't help:
- The cadence never changes, a 16-year-old talks in exactly the same cadence as someone quite a lot older, same language and, the same extension of syllables.
- The attempts at accents are appreciated but fail and can sometimes be extremely cringeworthy.

Overall the book and audiobook aren't horrendous, but it could have been so much more.

Superb!

Superbly dark, a mixing of light sarcasm and possible satire. Full of mystery and deep amount of intrigue. Wonderful!

Modern Arthurian fantasy

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I originally found this series on ebook when I was having a trawl through amazon. I consider it to be one of my best finds. It's a very British update of one of the most classical fantasy stories and is really good read. I'm glad to say that the audiobook version is just as high quality.

What other book might you compare Crimes Against Magic to, and why?

The closest comparison for me would be the Desden Files by Jim Butcher

Which character – as performed by James Langton – was your favourite?

Nate is an engaging and interesting main character and you really want to find out about his past as the story progresses

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I cant comment too many spoilers :)

Two stories in one so there is never a slow moment keeps interested on two fronts.

Nate help Tommy come to turns with what is happening to him the compassion and the danger in one.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The odd moment truly made me laugh as do the other books.
