Loved that this book was narrated by the author as she has a warm and calming voice. The story was engaging, entertaining, insightful and educational. I only wish it contained a bit more scope about marriage in many other cultures and religions around the world, but as she explained, that might be too much to cover. Great job overall, thanks LG!

I like Elizabeth Gilbert because she talks about things that we only think! We only think about 'marriage' but not in the way we should. This memoir was always going to be difficult after the best seller 'Eat, Pray, Love' which is an amazing book, but this book is different, very different. This book tells us of the story of her romance a few years on and also more importantly about marriage and the things that we don't say or think that we should have before we do get ... or don't get married. Read it and I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Congratulations Elizabeth you have done it again!

I am a fan of Liz Gilbert from Big Magic and I enjoyed the anthropological aspects of this booked mixed with personal anecdotes from the author own experience. I now have a more open and somewhat positive view of the marriage institution because I’ve read and now listened to some of the wise and funny musings in this book.

I was looking for books about marriage and what it really means, this book really helped me as it was the authors thoughts and research and kind of her over thinking the whole thing! It was like reading someone’s journal who is struggling with the idea of marriage. Ultimately it did help me with my out doubts about getting married. As much as it was helpful to me I’m not sure I would enjoy it as just a book in itself. She is a bit self indulgent as others have said and I definitely rolled my eyes a few times thinking she sounds pretty annoying! So basically I’d recommend it if it is relevant to you but not just as a book to read for pleasure

I could listen to Liz Gilbert speak all day everyday forever. She has a beautiful quality to her voice, warm, inviting and extremely expressive. I was so excited to hear this after listening to eat pray love (which is my favourite book of all time ). I loved the perfect blending of story telling and account of historical facts. A truely fascinating, emotional listen and when it was all said and done I cried like a baby for ending and the longing for it never to be over. Elizabeth Gilbert is an amazing writer and it is an absolute pleasure to have her read her own words aloud!! I am excited to go back and devour all she has written. Thank you, Liz for opening yourself up so wholeheartedly to your readers. You truely are an inspiration and helped me out of a dark time with these two books.

An extremely clever author. Articulate & also able to gather much research & come up with unique spins on life, the universe & everything; well on Western marriage & her place in its institution & the world. I'd like her to pen a book on retirement or older age when she gets there because you could never call her work "same old same old". So many psychologists Etc drone on in highly dictatorial, non personal, non thinking parrot fashion type information & insights ( that aren't their own, just that with which they have been indoctrinated.) Its totally the reverse with Liz Gilbert. She is intellectually clever, a free thinker & really synthesises well the material she has researched. She is not a copier. She is a creator. I know she & Filipe are divorced now. I wonder if that was a mutual agreement. Don't think I could live with her! 😆

Well written and narrative - engaging! Really makes you think about the institution of marriage, and if and how you might want to make it work for you. All the while weaving in Gilbert’s own journey to marriage, second time around, despite her legitimate concerns about doing so. A follow on from Eat, Pray, Love. I now want to read the follow on from this... where is it!?!
