About this listen
Duane remembers the Speed-D-Mart. In the usual circumstances, it's not a place anyone would want to visit at night. But these aren't usual circumstances. Duane throws on his clothes: the store is just 10 minutes down the block.
Now Sherry is waiting. Ten minutes has gone, so has 20. She's not worried. What's another few minutes? Then she hears the noise from down the street. It might be a door slamming. It might be the backfire of a car. But Sherry thinks it sounds mostly like a gunshot.

I had a good poke around the existing reviews before choosing this book. They aren't that glowing but I figured I know Laymon's work and I know the sorts of themes he goes for. So I dived into this one.
Without wishing to spoil anything, it started well - although Gene Engene (the narrator) does a good job, he does sound like he would be better placed narrating something far more factual and serious. This is by no means a deal breaker though! What I would say is that this book deals with rapey subject matter for a large part of the book and far more so than any other Laymon work that I have read previously. Again, not a deal breaker, but it does linger a lot throughout the book and is probably best left for the die-hard Laymon fans (myself included).
Although I enjoyed it, it's perhaps not a best book if it's your first Laymon read - go for Savage instead!

Good book but....

It's unabridged so no complaints there, everything was present and correct.
I had only ONE gripe with the storytelling...
One of the lead characters was a female and the narrators' attempt at giving her a "voice" was pretty bad. Yes, I know the narrator was a guy so we can't expect miracles but it sounded more like someone doing a bad impression of a little girl. it's difficult to explain. Sufficient to say Laymon did write some pretty heavy stuff and the Narrator did his best.
Storytelling = 9/10
Male Voices = 7/10 (he chose to portay most of the males as quite dorky)
Female Voices = 2/10
Not quite right.
