There was so much hype in the lead up to this that I honestly was expecting more. It wasn’t totally awful and once I got into it I was looking forward to seeing how it would get to the happy ending but honestly the ending was quite abrupt. To me it felt like a whole lot of build up to a relationship and then a big let down. Hate to be that person but if you want a better lesbian romance in a football setting give Hotshot by Clare Lydon a try.

I'm not entirely sure what I can say for this book. I didn't hate it, but I didn't find myself desperate to return to it either. To be completely honest, towards the end of the book, I almost had to force myself to finish it. However, I'm pretty sure that was because by the end, both narrators had irked me beyond belief that I was no longer invested in the story.

This is the first audiobook I've listened to by Meryl Wilsner & if I look past the narration, I would say this was a solid story. It had relatable & funny moments, spicey scenes that were quite vivid & tackled (pun intended) some intense issues. I personally loved the way Meryl showed the characters different approaches to discovering & coming to terms with their own individual neurodivergence. I don't really feel like the characters connected as much as I was being told they were within the story. Granted, they complimented each other personality wise, but for me it lacked that "umph", desire & heat that usually comes with friends with benefit stories.

However, I feel like those things lacking could be down to both narrators. I'm no expert on accents or voices, but I do listen to a lot of audiobooks & I require a certain level of vocal quality to enjoy the story. I've only ever experienced one other audiobook, where I had to stop listening because of the narrator, but this book was a close call to a DNF. Firstly, there should have been only one narrator. To be brutally honest, it felt like each narrator was reading a different book with the way they approached the story & the characters' intentions, & neither narrator could do the other narrator's character voice justice. In other words, the person who voiced Grace's parts had Phoebe's voice sounding completely different to the way the person narrating that character had created & vise versa. Secondly, both narrators needed more distinctive accents & voices for the supporting characters. There were too many times when I didn’t have a clue who was talking because the narration sounded so similar for all the characters. Finally, it ended up being that due to both narrators lack of accent distinction meant they actually changed one of the characters accent from what what written. There is a character in this book called Ash, a fellow player, they are described as being Welsh. However, neither narrator could do a Welsh accent. They made Ash sound Scottish most of the time, then Irish, then a bit of English & a smidge of American at some points. I didn't recognise it as Welsh at all & I only live 2 hours away from Wales. That complaint also extends to the National team coach, Amanda, who was described as British. Well, both narrator had a loose grasp on what was a British accent. It was better than what poor Ash got, but they both made her sound like an extra from Downtown Abbey with no discernable region behind the accent. The person narrating Phoebe's parts was stronger than the person narrating for Grace, so it is probably a testament to her & the story that I managed to finish it.

All in all, I would recommend this book, but don't get the audiobook. Read a paper or ebook copy. I wish I had.

Definitely made by Americans....Scotland and Wales are different places with different accents. Definitely an avoidable mistake.

The narrator was so bad I had to use 2x speed to blur out some of the horrific accents and over pronunciation/emphasis on words. Also anybody that uses c***t got female genitalia ain't it.

Just what the title says: the audio performance is great, but the rest was a bit of a miss. The characters seem to be told to us, more than shown… they’re also both annoying in very different ways (but I think I may feel that because aside of their internal monologue we don’t have much else and I cannot stress enough how important it is for me to feel and see a character rather than being told every single thought they have). The timeline of where the characters are (which team they’re playing with, when the scene is set etc) is sometimes a bit unclear. Moreover, I was expecting (possibly my fault?) an enemies to lovers kinda story?! There seems to be not enough angst for my taste, and I’m not even sure they even dislike each other for more than 20 lines in one of the first chapters… a bit of a hit and miss with steamy scenes too unfortunately for me: too much dialogue, a bit cringey and awkward, but hey, many readers loved it so if extensive talk during sex is your jam, you’ll love those bits!

I bought this because I'd seen lots of content advertising this on TikTok and I'm quite into football. However, I was totally underwhelmed, which is what's promoted my review. Everything just felt off to me. considering I'm around 60 lesfic books in, this is one of the least enjoyable I've come across.
The dialogue and interactions with the main characters, who are in their twenties come across as far too juvenile, if it wasn't clear I would have pitched it as 17yolds.
Too many silly moments where you want to bang your head on the wall because the characters are behaving in a way that, in my opinion, in real life just wouldn't happen.
Frustrating, a bit boring. with a lot of the time, two unlikeable main characters! Maybe other listeners liked the sex scenes, but it certainly didn't make up the rest for me!
