About this listen

Ambrose Bierce's short stories are generally held to be among the best of the 19th century. He wrote realistically of the terrible things he had seen in the war in such stories as An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge and Chickamauga.

In Chickamauga, he gives a vivid description, through the eyes of a child, of the aftermath of a Civil War battle. The reason for the child's unusual reaction to the scene is revealed in a startling conclusion.

Editor reviews

David Ely delivers a moving and vividly realized performance of this heartbreaking short story by writer Ambrose Bierce. “Chickamauga” depicts a battle during the American Civil War. The twist? It’s told from the viewpoint of a child who becomes lost in a forest while pretending to fight an imaginary foe. He falls asleep near a stream and wakes to find a group of soldiers creeping on their hands and knees like babies in the desolate landscape. Little does the boy know, the greatest horror has yet to pass.
