About this listen

In this comical collection of memories, storyteller Daniel Pinkwater tells how he grew into the beloved figure he is today: a robust genius of the printed page and rotund genie of the radio.

In inimitable fashion, Pinkwater recounts the conversation with his father that suddenly made him an art major in college. He describes his inauguration as a sculptor in a sleazy Chicago art factory and recalls setting off for a bright center of the American Art Scene, or at least as close as Hoboken, New Jersey. Finally, we watch as pinkwater pictures his first true audience, children.

Chicago Day/Hoboken Nights shows how this visual artist turned to writing, only to be hailed as a "comic master" (Washington Post Book World) "Who has always been a born storyteller" (The Pittsburgh Press). As millions of radio listeners already know, no one has had a life quite like Daniel Pinkwater's.

The content of this book is of course excellent, and Pinkwater's narration of his own work is velvety satisfying as well as very funny. This book is autobiographical stories from his life, most well under ten minutes long.

But disappointingly this is only a small excerpt of the book. Many more recordings of stories from this book are floating around the Internet, and were in the version I had on tape years ago, but aren't included in this audiobook. Most of the biggest gems aren't here, meeting the pickle you can't eat, most of his adult life including his time as a dog trainer, many stories about his father such as translating his strange speech, amateur film making or being forced to smoke a whole packet of tobacco, and many many more.
