About this listen

Editor reviews

FonoLibro's Spanish-language production of Cirilio Villaverde's novel creates tremendous atmosphere with vivid performances by the actors as well as a musical score that reflects this 19th-century tale of the titular character, the illegitimate daughter of a wealthy landowner and his slave. Cecilia falls in love with her half-brother, Leonardo, who abandons her for a wealthy white woman, leading to a dramatic chain of events that sees Leonardo dead and Cecilia in prison. A tragic story of love and violence, Cecilia Valdes is a classic of Cuban literature for its insights into race and class in colonial Cuba.

This reminded me of Thomas Hardy but with the sense of inevitable damage mitigated by the much less disastrous final outcome. The abridged version seems to make some abrupt shifts, and may leave out interesting pictures of Havana life in the 19th century, which would considerably deepen the novel. (I do not know the full length version). Its classic status still shines through, and the reading is excellent.
