About this listen

Andrew Wakefield reveals the inside story of the vaccine-autism connection, and his controversial research.

As Andrew Wakefield states in his prologue, “If autism does not affect your family now, it will. If something does not change - and change soon - this is almost a mathematical certainty. This book affects you also. It is not a parochial look at a trivial medical spat in the United Kingdom, but dispatches from the battlefront in a major confrontation - a struggle against compromise in medicine, corruption of science, and a real and present threat to children in the interests of policy and profit. It is a story of how ‘the system’ deals with dissent among its doctors and scientists.”

In the pursuit of possible links between childhood vaccines, intestinal inflammation, and neurologic injury in children, Wakefield lost his job in London’s Royal Free Hospital, his country of birth, his career, and his medical license. A recent General Medical Council ruling stated that he was “dishonest, irresponsible and showed callous disregard for the distress and pain of children.” Maligned by the medical establishment and mainstream media, Wakefield endeavors to set the record straight in Callous Disregard. While explaining what really happened, he calls out the organizations and individuals that are acting not for the sake of children affected by autism, but in their own self-interests.

Editor reviews

Diagnoses of autism are rising. Why? Is some biological agent causing an actual uptick in autism?

In 1998, the respected medical journal The Lancet published a paper by Dr. Andrew Wakefield, a U.K.-based physician and researcher, that proposed a link between child vaccinations and autism. The paper ignited a major public fear of vaccinations and a hot scientific debate which ended with the disgrace and discrediting of Wakefield and his findings.

Callous Disregard, adeptly narrated by Gildart Jackson, is Wakefield’s attempt to uphold his original findings and clear his name. More than a discussion of vaccination and autism, Callous Disregard, is a look into the process of scientific discovery and the special interests that can get in the way.

Informative and logical, a must for anyone wishing to make an informed choice on the truth for the possibility in vaccination.

Excellent to hear the another side of the story.

Regarding this book, the author claims he lost his job as doctor. So either he's completely stupid crazy, and should never have been there in the first place, or he's genuinely trying to warn people of something, that nobody in the higher echolons of society want people to hear. Personally after hearing the same story 100 times over, it gets increasingly difficult to chalk everything up to coincidence, but who knows, maybe the parents made it up - which eventually is also a coincidence. the book also describes with strong hints, that this is ultimately about profits and saving face politically, and any reneging would open the floodgates to even more claims for compensation, and while I understand this is his thoughts, I don't agree. is there a problem? sure there is, you have to very ignorant to not realise that something with today's kids is very wrong Vs a few decades ago. But expecting a system that we call society who produces these kids to somehow self regulate and self correct, is something I'll never understand people seeking. it's like asking the system to go after Blair over the whole WMD lie that took us to war, it simply ain't happening. while I appreciate the author thinks everything else is just and above board, and the only reason things don't sort themselves out, is due to legal experts having a lack of medical expertise, I find myself wanting to tell him over and over again in this book "it's like this by design." I wish him all the best, right or wrong, he gave his career up for what he believed is right.

the facts don't fit

As a nurse with an academic background in medical sociology and the history & philosophy of science, I feel the comparison of Wakefield with Semmelweis is an apt one. Those who have left negative reviews have either not listened to the book or, if they have, have failed to understand any clinical, legal, ethical or logical points that have been made therein.

Important book

Very detailed explanation of the whole debacle - any trust one had in the medical establishment is gone

Not a literary masterpiece but..

A heavy read (well listen) but as the father of an autistic child goes a long way to explain what was going wrong and why they had to strike off a doctor to protect pharma companies. So many of the characteristics if the children mimic exactly what parents of children with ASD notice after mmr vaccination. Hopefully one day science will prevail and the veil of secrecy will be lifted on what really has happened to our children.

Struck off for political reasons not malpractice

how anyone could listen to this and not realise the awful state of affairs our system is in, is beyond me. this is a must for all doubters.

finally the truth of what actually happened

This book is a detailed account of Wakefield's battle with the medical establishment. Have only got halfway through so far but character of book is clear. Its a good book & I dare say Wakefield is in the right but there seems to be only limited discussion of the key underlying subject, ie the link between vaccines & autism. Its more about who said what, why & when. So you need to be very interested in this admittedly important case to persevere. And if that is what you want the book is excellent. Clear & well written. Also well read in a pleasant voice.

Wakefield exonerated

Information everyone should know but no medical or governmental organization would want out there!

I was interested to read this book after my friend was vaccine injured. The more I read around this subject the more I realise what an evil and corrupt world we live in. Dr Wakefield dared to speak out against a trillion dollar industry and paid the price.

Heartbreaking what has become our healthcare system. An important read written by a true hero.

It’s only fair to hear his account of events.
I admire his courage to hold fast to his convictions. To not waiver in face of the onslaught brought upon his character for bringing attention to what I’d hope any good doctor would do- the help is harming some and the families affected deserve to be believed and receive justice.

Worthwhile listen
