About this listen

An unforgettable novel about childhood, family, conflict and guilt from America's greatest storyteller John Grisham.

Thirty years have passed since 11-year-old Paul Tracy watched his troubled father, Warren, a pitcher for the New York Mets, clash with his childhood hero, the Cubs' golden-boy Joe Castle, in a contest from which no winners emerged.

Now the news that his father is dying brings the memory of that day flooding back. Deciding that it's time to face up to what really happened on that baseball field in 1973, father and son make their way to Calico Rock, Arkansas, where either redemption or rejection awaits them.

For those who like baseball most probably good. but I couldn't follow the story as it kept ongoing back in time and so I kept losing it

A massive Grisham fan, but fear from his best work. Much prefer the law based books.

Not Grishams best

I agree with the previous reviewer, well written and if you like baseball 70% is game comentary. Not what I have come to expect from the great man.

What has happened to John Grisham? Sentimental rubbish, beautifully written sentimental rubbish but still… This book should carry a warning. “If you like classic Grisham, then you should probably avoid this”.

No twists, no turns and no pace. Gone are all the recognisable traits that fans like me buy his books for. Instead this offering is more of a Fable that takes you, with the books characters, down a predicable and well trodden moral path.
