About this listen

From the author of Mayflies, an irresistible, unputdownable, state-of-the-nation novel - the story of one man's epic fall from grace.
May 2021. London.

Campbell Flynn - art historian and celebrity intellectual - is entering the empire of middle age. Fuelled by an appetite for admiration and the finer things, controversy and novelty, he doesn't take people half as seriously as they take themselves. Which will prove the first of his huge mistakes.

The second? Milo Manghasa, his beguiling and provocative student. Milo inhabits a more precarious world, has experiences and ideas which excite his teacher. He also has a plan.

Over the course of an incendiary year, a web of crimes and secrets and scandals will be revealed, and Campbell Flynn may not be able to protect himself from the shattering exposure of all his privilege really involves. But then, he always knew: when his life came tumbling down, it would occur in public.

'A brilliant state-of-the-nation novel that pulls down the facades of high society, and knocks over the 'good liberal' house-of-cards. O'Hagan is not only a peerless chronicler of our times, but has other gifts - of generosity, humour and tenderness - which make this novel an utter joy to read.' Monica Ali

Wow

This book is beyond exceptional. Incredible read really shines in a mirror to London today. Lots of characters to follow and all get a storyline. This book is heartbreaking at times and uplifting in others. And the narrator does a great job. Characterisation is as great as Zadie Smith.

A saga for our time

Enjoyed enormously - reminded me of Capital from a few years ago. Good narration despite the Scottish the instead of thee before vowels.

A Masterpiece !

What a triumph ! Fantastic story about people and society and modern Britain ! The pace is just perfect. I thought it would really too long at 23h. It wasn’t. What really made it was Michael Abubakar’s amazing narration. Every single character brought to life just brilliantly. Thoroughly recommended ! Bereft now it is over !!

Dickensian & bang up to date

A window on modern life. Complex, fascinating interweaving of great characters. Big themes well handled, it's been compared to Dickens in its portrayal of London and the many different strands of plot and strata of society that are woven together, and Dickensian is exactly the best one word description,

Gripping

Shame about all the stereotypes. But what a gripping yarn! Amazing narration too.

A great love letter to London, and a strong bet for this year’s Booker.

Excellent reader

The fact that the reader could use so many accents really brought the story and the characters to life. I’m so glad I listened to as well as read this book. The reader has an extraordinary ability to capture the many different voices, helping the narrative to make sense.

A riveting examination of diverse elements of current society.

I found the narrative enthralling and convincing. The quality of the writing is remarkable - just one thing- why did a boy with a passport get in a truck?

Breadth of characters - super

Excellent state-of-nation novel. Ambitious novel with many characters.
Well read. Stronger with older voices than voices for younger ones. Excellent though.

What a story!

So carefully crafted and full of twists and turns. big questions incorporated/addressed which are so relevant to right now;
race, power, influence, privilege, responsibility, immigration, old and new… so many ‘bon mots’ which rang so true and pulled me up short. Loved it
