I absolutely loved the narration if this

I’m from Canada, so hockey is a big deal up here. And I’m painfully aware of lack of representation on the ice – specifically players of color – especially Indigenous players – as well as players who identify as LGBTQ. Things are better in the world of figure skating – but that change has mainly happened in the last few years.

I think that’s why picking up E.M. Lindsey’s latest sports romance was so important to me. Let’s have a gay Indian hockey player and an amputee figure skater. Representation in all the good ways. Let’s layer on emotional issues and make them fully-rounded characters. That’s what makes EM’s books so powerful – they mirror real life in so many ways.

I really enjoyed this story – watching Ravi and Adrien dance around each other as they struggle with the challenges in their lives. And with how Ravi has to come to face something he’s done. And how Adrien has to overcome his tendency to view the world as black and white.

Anyway, EM has created a world I’d love to live in and there are more books in the series coming up and I can’t wait.

John Solo narrated this book and did a great job. Can’t wait for the next one.

Story: There is never any doubt for me, that anything this author writes will be an emotional roller coaster I am bound to love. Breakaway fit the bill perfectly, with a heartbreaking backstory for Ravi and explosive chemistry we get to see developing into so much more.
Narration: John Solo is always a sure bet. Great performance.

This wonderful sports romance novel not only grabbed and captivated my attention the entire book, but it tugged on my heartstrings too. E.M. Lindsey is a gifted author, I enjoy their writing style and how realistic and relatable their characters and storylines are which makes them easy to connect with. Ravi Chandola, a professional hockey player and the captain of his NHL team. He had to work hard to get where he was today and he almost lost it all after making a stupid mistake after a team event. Fined and assigned to community service brings him to work with Adrian Fischer, a former professional figure skater. Adrian used to crush on Ravi until he found out what he did, now he has nothing but animosity towards him. But the two need to work together and as much as they try to avoid each other, it is impossible not see and interact with each other. I adored these two, each one deals with their own inner demons, but once Adrian saw Ravi for who he truly was he saw past his anger. I loved how everything played out in this book, the story is beautifully plotted with plenty of drama, angst, heartfelt emotions and a slow burn romance. Also loved the camaraderie amongst his teammates, Adrian’s friend Noah was great too. E.M. Lindsey, thank you for another fabulous story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 And for the amazing narration, John Solo delivers an outstanding performance bringing these characters and their story to life. He has a complete understanding of the character he portrays, gives each a voice that is a perfect fit for that character’s persona, sounds believable in every role he plays and just as I picture the character to sound. You could hear how much heart he puts in to his work as he captures all the character’s emotions and projects them into his performance and has you feeling every single one. This entertaining storyteller is a versatile voice artist and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another fabulous listen.

Breakaway was emotional and intense. Ravi and Adrien had a slow burn romance and I enjoyed watching them slowly yet surely come together.

I really liked Ravi teammates - they were a funny bunch.

I thoroughly enjoyed the narrator’s performance.

Another great story by EM Lindsey that promises to be the start of a great series. Fantastic characters to get to know and follow. John Solo did a super job bringing the characters to life.

The characters in this book have depth and personalities that you can believe.

Ravi makes a huge mistake and ends up doing community service. As a pro hockey player, he did his community service at a local ice rink helping disabled children, that is, until he met Adrien.

Both these characters have great personalities, even if they don't actually like each other. Unfortunately, there are many hurts to get through before these two could be friends.

Very well written and well worth the read/listen.

John Solo did an excellent job narrating this book. However, I did speed up to 1.20 on audible. Clear and concise, a great listen.

If you are of an age to have watched the movie The Cutting Edge from 1992, you'll love this m/m variation on a hockey player/figure skater story. There is added spice here because Ravi is brought into Adrien's orbit because of his requirement to do some community service and these guys are adults not the young people of the movie so the emotions are more visceral with life experience behind them. I loved both these prickly, hurting men and John Solo did a superb job of bringing them to life and showing their sparks turning into flames of a completely different and life altering kind.

Well-written and fabulously narrated! The story was full of emotions and feels. I loved the story. The characters were perfect, though some were more likable than others. It just all worked. I'll definitely be devouring the rest of the series.

The premise of this story is promising - a former figure skater (Adrien) supervising community service hours for an NHL player (Ravi). Adrien immediately hates Ravi for his “crime” and it seems as if Ravi will never complete his community service hours.

Slowly, the men start to warm to each other. Then suddenly this book has kind of an instalove trope. I’ll admit, I didn’t really follow as readily.

Readers also know, right from the beginning, that Ravi didn’t intentionally drink and drive. The whole subplot about uncovering the perpetrator who drugged him was weak. Yeah, he was roofied and yes that shouldn’t be taken lightly. But, fact is, he still got into his car when he couldn’t stand up straight and could barely stay awake. So, perhaps not as forgivable as the author wants us to believe. Even if he was in that kind of shape purely from the migraine gripping him, he should have known better than to drive.

My problems with this book are: (1) I don’t believe the NHL would have allowed someone with a DUI to continue to be captain (2) Ravi was incredibly short-tempered with a rookie, another unlikely happenstance (3) Ravi was tough to like because he was so angry and short with people, he was described as a respected captain but we don’t really get to see that part of him, (4) Adrien isn’t truly very kind to others, either. He kept saying he was happy with the life he created but he kept acting bitter and entitled. (5) This book had so much potential, with a MC who is a POC in a largely-White game and an amputee, but neither of these facts seemed to drive any part of the story. The world Lindsey created, on the other hand, where being an “out” NHL player isn’t a big deal . . . well, that’s a world I’d love to be a part of.

Solo’s performance was decent. Since I’d not read the print-version of the book, I can’t say if he enhanced the characters at all. But I will say, he infused each with their own voice, and it was easy to differentiate who was talking at any given time.
