This has to be one of Marjorie Allingham's best books - even without Albert Campion! The narration by Francis Matthews is exceptional and he brings the finely drawn characters to life. People who object to the way things really were should be reading or listening to something else. I hope books written long ago will continue to be published and recorded in their uncensored entirety. While people who do appreciate them may deprecate some words, phrases and ideas expressed, hopefully we have the intellect to realise that this was normal for those times,

A classic for the times

I really enjoyed this book, I thought the performance was spot on, very enjoyable.

Good old fashioned murder mystery

Very upper class cast and setting. Quite well narrated but the attempt at a Scottish accent for the lead detective is pretty hopeless oscillating between Welsh, Irish and heaven knows what. Also be advised the derogatory term n- - -r is used frequently and gratuitously. Surely Audible could have done some editing here.

In many ways a classic but dated.

So very well read- a real evocation of the period which it is set in.

Excellent reading of a golden age whodunnit

I've listened to all of Margery Allingham's books that are available to date and this is definitely her best in my opinion. Excellent story, brilliantly written. Suspense to the very end.

Margery Allingham's best!

The story is a typically good one from Margery Allingham but it is greatly enhanced by the incredible vocal agility of Francis Matthews. What a combination!

Superb all round

Great book. Highly recommend ! Excellent plot and I didn’t guess the outcome though I usually do.

Great

A bit of a shock to find casual use of the racially offensive ‘n’ word half way through. There is some context provided at the end but it’s hard listening for modern ears. Also quite breathtaking ageism. This apart it was a good story which had me hooked to the end. The narrator was generally good but I felt that he didn’t differentiate enough between Frances and David when they were talking which was confusing at times. Also the voice tricks given to the Scottish inspector were very irritating but it may well be written like that in the text - I don’t know as I haven’t read the book.

A gripping story well narrated but . . .
