Narcissa, Oklahoma, juillet 1966. Un jour de grand beau temps, un homme fut pris d'un coup de folie. Il égorgea une femme dans une maison et poignarda une petite fille dans le jardin. Il laissa pour morte une mère de famille et son fils, puis repartit à bord d'une Ford Mustang, couvert de sang.
Été 2011. Une Française, Lola Lombard, part à la recherche du père de ses deux enfants, volatilisé sur la route 66. Sa seule piste : un cahier que son mari lui aurait envoyé et qui pourrait bien être la preuve de l'existence d'un des plus ahurissants criminels que les États-Unis aient connus... et dont le chemin traversait déjà la petite ville de Narcissa à l'été 1966.
