Deutschland 1940, ein Volk im Kriegstaumel.
Die 25-jährige Elisabeth scheint für ihre Umgebung etwas merkwürdig, da sie lieber zeichnet und Klavier spielt, als den Eltern bei der Bewirtschaftung des Hofes zu helfen. Durch ein dramatisches Ereignis fällt sie in eine tiefe Depression und soll in der Landesheilanstalt Stadtroda genesen.
