Marcie, en 22-årig kvinde med kælenavnet Bird, møder op ved sin bedstefar Jacks dødsleje. Hun er vokset op i hans hjem efter morens død, og deres forhold er meget nært – modsat Marcies forhold til bedstemoren Mary, grandtanten Alice og faren Alec.
