About this listen
“Luke” Hamilton has always been sure she’d never marry. She accepted that she would spend her life alone when she chose to live her life disguised as a man.
After working in a brothel for three years, Nora Macauley has lost all illusions about love. She no longer hopes for a man who will sweep her off her feet and take her away to begin a new, respectable life.
But now, they find themselves married and on the way to Oregon in a covered wagon, with 2,000 miles ahead of them.

I love the fluidity of Luke's gender. I thought it was really well written and I enjoyed reading their perspective. And another note on their character I loved the way they interact with Amy and the other children. (I'm using they/them pronouns for Luke because even though they use she/her for themselves I just feel like if Luke were alive now they would be gender fluid and/or trans masc)
Luke was my favourite character simply because I thought they were the most interesting to be inside the head of. But I love Nora too. I love her strong will and her fire as well as her compassion. I thought the character of Bernice was fascinating. I loved Amy and the other kids but I just love kids in general so that wasn't surprising. My favourite relationship in the book was (un)surprisingly Luke and Amy.
The writing fully immersed me in the world. I believed I was on the Oregon Trail with Luke and Nora and the Garfields and everyone. I have a love/hate relationship with slow burn stories because on one hand they're beautiful and give me more of the story but on the other hand I want to smack the characters on the head and tell them to just kiss already!!
I can't wait to read the rest of the books in the Oregon series!
Jae did it again- I bow before her writing.

This is a slow slow burn. The beauty of the story telling is the depiction of the challenges faced by women in general during this period let alone lesbian women. And the choices they had to make as a result. After devouring this book, thankfully there was the sequel to keep Luke and Nora with me for a little longer.
It is my first time listening to Hayden Bishop. I found she did a fabulous job with the narration and voices. Having many audiobooks with narration by Abby Craden, Lori Prince and Angela Dawe (my top 3 favourite narrators), for this series, Hayden Bishop was the perfect choice.
Slow burn that is movie material
