تتمحور أحداث الرواية حول بطلها الطالب المتفوق في معهد المعلمين ب"دمنهور" والذي يتسبب اعتداءه على مدرسه في طرده من المعهد وسقوطه إلى غياهب العالم السفلي لنتعرف من خلاله على وكالة عطية؛ مأوى المهمشين والأشقياء والصعاليك في المدينة.
