About this listen

Professional wrestler Ashley Massaro died by suicide in 2019. Ashley vs WWE follows events leading up to her death and examines allegations of abuse while she was wrestling for WWE. As journalist Isobel Thompson delves into Ashley's story, she investigates whether her allegations are just the tip of the iceberg. This story takes Isobel from the UK, to Ashley’s home of Long Island, and into the world of WWE wrestling in the early 2000s - where the power, influence and misogyny of the real world played out through the characters in the ring.

This was a riveting listen from start to finish.

Balanced and fair with exceptional presentation, this was a fascinating deep dive into an exceptionally popular yet little covered industry.

Would highly recommend.

Superb Podcast

I've heard her tragic story before, this has expanded on that greatly. The interviews were really good, I think the in-ring sound effects were overused and became a distraction. A few just to punctuate moments would have been good but these were overused. Though the reporter did some quality investigative work, I also think the presentation was a bit of a performance piece for her. Generally good but still a mixed bag.

Good, but could have been more documentary style.

Such a brilliantly researched and compellingly told story that does justice to the woman at the centre of it. Brilliantly narrated - Isobel strikes the perfect tone tackling dark issues, and throws some humour in too. I hope some more good comes from this podcast. Would recommend ten times over.

Brilliant journalism

A must listen. This is a breathtaking insight into modern America. It has a gripping plot which you can’t turn off, and the narration is Broadway quality. How did they find this all out?

Must listen

A story of a lovely person badly let down by the people she worked for. Her only crime was to trust those evil scumbags who run the WWE and believe that they would have her best interests at heart, very sad story.

Tragic

A sad and shocking story. Well-researched and delivered in a tasteful and balanced way. I just binged the whole show in two days!
Looking forward to hearing more from journalist Isobel Thompson.

Brilliant - an insight into the dark unbalanced world of WWE. This podcast is so well researched and the story is sensitively told. I listened in one go!

This is a sad but true story of the way the wrestling industry treats its athletes

sad but true

really good to hear all of the perspectives. but clearly anyone listening or doing a bit of research can also see that the WWE has buried Ashley's experiences and undoubtedly contributed to her feelings of depression. really sad but I am pleased to see some revitalising of this in the media currently. it won't save Ashely but hopefully it will save others.

Disturbing But Important and Well Considered Piece
