About this listen
New enemies. Reluctant allies. A world on fire.
Jason has barely had a chance to catch his breath since Westley's interview and the break-in at Cerillion Entertainment headquarters. And yet the world keeps spinning....
A new threat has emerged, but this one is coming from inside Awaken Online. An unknown guild has somehow managed to threaten the game world. Yet, unlike Jason's former battles, his enemies are unclear—hidden in the shadows and hiring others to do their dirty work, including the infamous Death and Taxes. Without a clear enemy or way to stop this threat, Jason is forced to do something he never thought he would...ask for help.
Perhaps the united might of the avatars may be enough to subdue this new threat. Assuming they can overcome their issues and learn to fight together, they may be able to save AO.
And if not...they'll have front row seats to the end of the world.
Simply awesome. I can't wait for the next book!

struggled to finish this.
mostly this revolves around the hackneyed sub plot making all the avatars fight each other.
The puppet master is obvious to all involved and everyone is forced to act out of character and reduce their iq's to room temperature to drive the plot along.
15hrs left and so far I've spent most of it grinding my teeth.
previous books have been enjoyable so I will push on and update this review if my thoughts change.
*update*
not long after I wrote the above the author gave up on the attempts at intrigue and got back into his flow.
the results matched previous installations and the possibilities and hooks of the end chapter and epilogue have left me eager to read the next book.
might want to polish up the scoobydoo level intrigue in any future books.
flawed

This book didn’t motivate me to listen after the first few chapters, so while I have made it through to the end, I can’t say it was a gripping or even a particularly enjoyable listen and I have no desire for a second run through. It seems to be a clumsy transition into a new arc and the characters just seem to shrug and go along with the flow on a very thin narrative and with only superficial upset along the way. The supporting cast we spent time getting to know are mostly absent, almost forgotten and when they are involved it’s a thin veneer of inclusion.
At this point it’s become a pantomime, character actions are inconsistent and often make little sense, timelines and behaviours are all over the place with powerful Avatars suddenly acting all submissive, balance is non-existent with more plot devices added to patch the gaping holes. Overall, the travellers and game world no longer form a believable narrative.
There’s a shortage of good books in this genre and this was my second favourite series. However, the Flame branch and Armageddon both feel like filler from an author not sure where the story is heading.
A confusing pantomime tale

Generally very fun book but the whole thing did listen like it needed another draft.
Fun, but messy.
