About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

April Lady is read by Tanya Reynolds, star of Sex Education.

Nell Cardross and her husband are madly in love....

But they're very bad at showing it. While Nell believes her new husband, the Earl, married her out of convenience, Giles Cardross worries that his young wife is more interested in his money than his heart.

And Nell's secretive and extravagant spending is becoming a problem....

As she attempts to pay off her brother's never-ending gambling debts and prevent the Earl's half-sister from eloping with a potentially ruinous match, will Nell's heart of gold lead her - and her marriage - into trouble?

Critic reviews

"If you haven't read Georgette Heyer yet, what a treat you have in store!" Harriet Evans

"One of my perennial comfort authors. Heyer's books are as incisively witty and quietly subversive as any of Jane Austen's." (Joanne Harris)

entertaining

If you like a romantic, charming story, with believeable characters, this is for you. I really like this particular Georgette Heyer; the couple we are concerned about are already married, and it's an insight into difficult ways things were for both men and women then. A lovely supporting cast too, Felix is great. Reader is a little rapid; but gets the tone of dialogue right.

Lovely New Narrator

I’ve had the original narration of this book for sometime now and listened to it a number of times but it was never a favourite. However this time with the narration by Tanya Reynolds I enjoyed more than ever before. She brought the whole book alive for me and I discovered bits I don’t recall ever hearing before. It was a pleasure to listen to.

Love Georgette Heyer, she just deserves better readers!

Sadly, as with so many of Georgette Heyer’s charming Georgian romances this book is so badly read as to make it almost impossible to listen to. Why the reader couldn’t have done a little research about the period, before taking on the job of performing this book completely defeats me 😱

Quite fun but not the best

There were some good parts in this story, it’s well told and had decent characters and funny bits, but the whole plot seemed exceptionally trivial and pointless - the peril seemed so easy to get out of, and the entire plot revolving around how difficult it was to fix - I’m sure this is in part to demonstrate the immaturity of the heroine, but it just seemed a bit much. Reasonably pleasant listen, but I’ve heard much better from the new Penguin releases, and am now waiting for some of the better ones to come out from Penguin.

An excellent Regency story

Misunderstandings in the marriage of Lord and Lady Cardross lead to one disaster after another.
The feather brained teenage sister of Giles only makes matters worse.
Highly entertaining story and accurate description of the Regency era ❤❤❤❤

This is best narration of this book so far

I have a previous version of this audio book but it's hit and miss throughout the story.
As with another listeners review, most of this narration is much better than the previous one and brings out the best in the story

Amateur narrator spoiling an excellent story

The narrator could not differentiate between the different characters, her intonation was put in all the wrong places so the point was lost and the wrong emotion attributed to speeches, also far too fast and completely inappropriate pauses. If Penguin had hired a quality actor the story wouldn’t have been so bludgeoned and you could really get to know the character’s personalities as intended by the author. The story was excellent once you can learn to just listen to the words rather than the narrator.

My least favourite of Heyer's Regency stories.

Male protagonist underdeveloped and too few scenes between him Nell, particularly in the first half of the story. Good minor characters, as usual, and satisfactory ending.

Disappointing narration

This is a delightful story which was spoilt by the narration. There was no difference in the depiction of any of the characters. I put more effort into the characters in stories I read to!my granddaughters. Such a shame. I love novels and always picture the characters but this is difficult when they all sound the same.
