About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Every life is both ordinary and extraordinary, and Logan Mountstuart's - stretching across the 20th century - is a rich tapestry of both. As a writer who finds inspiration with Hemingway in Paris and Virginia Woolf in London, as a spy recruited by Ian Fleming and betrayed in the war and as an art-dealer in '60s New York, Logan mixes with the men and women who shape his times. But as a son, friend, lover and husband, he makes the same mistakes we all do in our search for happiness. Here, then, is the story of a life lived to the full - and a journey deep into a very human heart.

A man’s life through the turmoil of 20thC

I so believed Logan Mountstuart was real! I felt all his sadness, all his joy and despondency. This is the best book by Boyd I have read. I felt bereft when it came to an end.

Plot twists and authenticity by reference to real people and events.

Really engaging storytelling with a protagonist who was deeply flawed but lived a fascinating long life. Glad I listened to Audible rather than read the novel as the narrator was excellent.

Innovative storytelling

Interesting depiction of a life at an interesting time in history. Stimulating language, learnt more about art and literature of the period.
