The Right have hijacked Englishness. Can it be reclaimed?

Today, the only people who dare speak of Englishness are cheerleaders for Brexit, exceptionalism and imperial nostalgia. But there is another England, hiding in plain sight, which is dramatically more inclusive and forward looking. Here, Caroline Lucas delves deep into England's literary history to sketch out alternative stories of who we are - ones that we can all embrace to build a greener, fairer future.

This should be our new anthem, an England that really can be proud of itself and everyone living in our wondrously diverse and beautiful land. Sh e makes you feel as though we can do it, we can forgive we can appreciate we can solve our problems with a new English mindset.

Not how English governance is ,but how it should be. Fair, inclusive, and above all routed in the humanity of English literature.

The book opened my eyes to discomforts and contradictions that have lived with me since childhood in the 60s and why, despite those, I love this country.

Why I no longer fear and hate the flag.

I’d recommend this if you’re finding the world overwhelming & you’re worried about the future.
She crafts a different narrative. Interesting interpretations from Shakespeare, Shelley and Behn.

This was a very astute and intelligent analysis of England, past and present. I sincerely hope that Caroline’s vision for our democracy will happen. I will miss seeing her standing up in the House of Commons and speaking the truth!

Absolutely brilliant!

I don’t suppose I would be listening to this if I didn’t like Caroline Lucas, so I wasn’t surprised to strongly agree with most of what she says. I enjoyed the book, and I might have been tempted to give it five stars because I think she has a very positive message, but in all honesty there are books that I’ve enjoyed more and I think five stars should be reserved for the very best. That said, I am still happy to recommend it. Telling her story through literature is a nice idea and I enjoyed the quotes, but I’m not sure it worked quite as well as it might have done on that score. However, I don’t want to sound as if I’m being negative. I did enjoy the book and I got through it in a couple of days. Well worth a listen.

An enjoyable book in which Lucas makes a lot of sense

Very well written and read. I particularly enjoyed viewing through the lens of literature to bring together past and present. She makes a compelling argument.

Beautiful comparisons between literature and the current 'state of affairs'

Runs the gamut from Eng Lit through ecology to economics and keeps going. Only fault for me is it stops at all,

Encyclopedic, engrossing, entertaining

I loved every part of this book! Such an interesting historical look at how we've ended up where we are in our classist capitalist political system. With a sense of hope for how things could be different. It every UK school child learnt this rather than Kings & Queens and WWI & WWII, we could have such a different society! Well written, well informed and well narrated.

Everyone in the UK should read this!
