About this listen

Millions of readers around the world have relished Jeffrey Archer's short stories. Taking inspiration from his favourite short story writers - F. Scott Fitzgerald, Maupassant, H. H. Munro, W. Somerset Maugham, and O. Henry - Jeffrey Archer has written five best-selling collections over the years, and Macmillan are proud to announce the publication of a sixth volume of stories in May 2010.

Jeffrey has a natural aptitude for short stories that are stylish, witty, and entertaining. His mastery of characterisation and suspense, combined with a gift for the unexpected, jaw-dropping plot twist, show him at the height of his powers and demonstrate why he is one of Britain's best-selling authors.

All of Jeffrey's collections of short stories have been top-ten best sellers, and he is undoubtedly the best-selling English-language short story writer of our times.

I thoroughly enjoyed this latest short story compilation from Jeffrey Archer, and found the story involving the luck of the Irish particularly fine. However, to me the narration was, quite frankly, awful. Please, please Mr Archer, find another narrator before your next (eagerly awaited) effort.

Oh Dear! The narration.....

Like all collections some are better than others. The good ones are great and the other ones are still very worth a listen. All in all a refreshing collection of simple but captivating short stories.

Lovely collection of tales with twists

He’s just great at short stories. A master of a tale of the unexpected, each story is worthy of being adapted for television. Yet another top notch collection which satisfied my need for an entertaining puzzle, and a look into human nature and the brilliance of the human mind. Loved it.

Top Notch from Mr. Archer

Would you consider the audio edition of And Thereby Hangs a Tale to be better than the print version?

I have not read the print version

What was one of the most memorable moments of And Thereby Hangs a Tale?

All very good but the twist at the end of the final story was very good

How could the performance have been better?

I found the reader's voice very flat with little inflection, very disappointing

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

generally very good

Any additional comments?

I prefer the books JA has written.
Some of these seemed to end before you really got into them, others just did not really seem worth it. Others I would have liked padded out a bit more
Shame overall hense on 2 stars

good for a quick fix listen

I love Archer books. Kane and Abel is my all time favourite. I have read most of his other books including the other short story ones. I just did not enjoy this one as much. The first story is good. I can't put my finger on it but I just didn't enjoy it.

Not his best

Jeffrey Archer is one of my delightful sins, politics and perjury aside, he writes a fantastic tale. His novels turn and twist with characters that you care about, and his short stories are full of surprises and fun. Not so in this book, I found all the story endings predictable, and littered with pitiable characters; maybe because most of them are alleged to be based on true stories. This poor book was marred further with the dreadful, monotonous narration which lends nothing to the already dull tales. This won?t put me off listening to more Archer books, he can be forgiven one bad book, but let?s hope this is the last.
