Childhood favourite

Outdated and politically incorrect (!) but a reminder of reading books as a child that inspired a thirst for knowledge and an enduring love for the natural world.

Bring out the rest of the stories please

Brought back memories of reading these books as a kid in the library. The adventures of Hal and Roger are still really exiting. Really good narrator too. Hope they bring out the rest of the books

A wonderous adventure every kid should read.

John Hunt and his two sons Hal and Rodger take a trip to the Amazon to collect animals for zoos and research centres and explores unchartered parts of the river, making friends, and enemies, enemies with the indigenous peoples along the way. Man easting fish, giant snakes, deadly big cats. Amazon adventure is exciting and informative.

Read this book as a kid and loved it. Now it is on audiobook, I had to get it and it didnt dissapoint. The modern view point on collecting animals and how we talk about indigenous peoples has changed and you feel the difference between now and when the book was written, over 70 years ago but that difference feels informative not critical.

The audio is very well done, injecting drama, fear, tension and exctiment and bringing the characters to life. A must read, or in this case, listen to.

Enjoyable blast from the past

I enjoyed many Willard Price novels growing up. I especially loved the adventures the brothers went on and is was fun to dip back into that moment in my childhood. One thing to note, is that while listening to this story, I suddenly became aware of the types of language used to describe indigenous people, or any people of colour, there is also the questionable handling / capturing of animals from their habitat which, as a child, I completely overlooked, but now, it puts these books into perspective and really gives one insight into the author and the time he grew up in. Narrated very well by Daniel Weyman who vividly brings all the characters to life.

Brilliant reading and fantastic story

We loved listening to this and looking up images of the trees, animals and boats of the Amazon.

Revisiting a childhood favourite

Ignoring how dated it has become in a number of ways, it's still a superbly written story that may well have played a part in my love of adventure in adult life!
