About this listen

She could have stopped an awful crime. She could have saved a life. She tried to forget about it. But now, the truth is out. The terrifying new psychological thriller from the bestselling author of Retribution and Pretty Little Things.

Faith Saunders is the perfect wife, mother, and community champion – loved and admired by all who know her. One night will change everything.

As she drives home in the pouring rain, a dishevelled young woman appears out of nowhere, pleading for help. The isolated stretch of road is dark, and with her daughter Maggie asleep in the backseat, Faith refuses to let the stranger in. What she sees next will haunt her forever.

When the missing-person posters go up, Faith’s guilt consumes her. And then it turns out Maggie wasn’t asleep that night, her perfect life begins to unravel. Maggie’s testimony leads to an arrest. But Faith is the only one who can identify a second man involved in the woman’s abduction and subsequent murder. She has one chance to convince a jury of what happened. If she fails, two killers will be set free. And they know exactly where to find Faith and her family…

Nice plot, but the writer repeat things so often I wonder if she thinks her readers/listeners have problems remembering what they read/ heard a couple of minutes back. Wish her editor had done a better job with crossing out those doubled and sometimes tripled repeated phrases.

I was really enjoying this book, but the ending spoilt it. Felt like the author didn't know how to finish it,just floated away to guessing the outcome.

Disappointing Ending

No idea if you are supposed to have sympathy for the main character, Faith. I loathed her, self interested, self pitying pathetic character who spends a great deal of book in tears.

Book extremely slow and find myself cutting of for lengthy periods of time with no inclination to rewind. No idea why I'm sticking with it.,think it's because I've invested a long time and now reluctant to miss the ending.

narrator OK.

Self pitying whining pathetic individual

Typical is what it is. Typical of every american crime drama. Not what I'd call a thriller it has pace and tension but, oh yes there is a but. There's a great deal of info dumping and even I skipped chapters because i really didn't want all the background stuff such as discussions about proceedure and what took place between the detectives and the lawyer for the prosecution. The characters are well defined. Gerard is a sanctimonious patronizing you know what and if that's what was intended then it worked. Faith is a fairly weak person but again if that's what was intended then it worked. I found it a bit too predictable for my taste. The twists and turns were jsut what i expected including the big finish. It would work well enough as a movie with no doubt a spin off television series and no doubt all this saved a life and a marriage. Taht I don't know. I haven't finished it yet. Anyway for fans of American crime drama this isn't as bad as some of them I've read. It kept me enthralled until almost the end.

It might make a good movie

Julianne Hoffman books are quite gruesome and this ones no different. My first Hoffman audible and was addictive. Narrator brought all the characters to life.

Brilliant narrator. Couldn't stop listening

Such a weak story line with several inconsistencies. The majority is from the main characters perspective who is highly unlikeable, pathetic and really judgemental. Kind of like a middle class bad drama where by reason is overlooked. I didn't finish it as I was too frustrated by Faith's pathetic and classist character.

Didn't finish ☹️
