About this listen

A classic of Holocaust literature, Gerda Weissmann Klein's memoir tells the moving story of a young woman's experience as a slave laborer for the Nazis and her miraculous liberation. Gerda was 18 years old when she was taken from her home in Poland and imprisoned for 3 years in a series of German work camps. Meanwhile, her parents died in the ovens of Auschwitz and her brother perished in the interior of Poland. Gerda now lives in Arizona with her husband, Kurt Klein, who helped liberate Gerda from Volary, Czechoslovakia, on May 7, 1945. This moving memoir was the inspiration for the Academy Award-winning documentary One Survivor Remembers.©1957 Gerda Weissmann Klein (P)1997 FSG, Penguin U.S.A.

I cannot find it in me to write a review of Gerdas words. I’m so sorry any of this happened to her and all the millions of Jews and other ethnicities who were killed during ww2. I cried with deep sadness so many times whilst listening, and at the end I cried tears of happiness that she managed to live a full and happy life with children and grandchildren and for all that she did and her enduring love for Kurt. Bless you and all your family x
