Der junge englische Hobbyforscher und Reisende Andrew Dennistown besichtigt während eines Urlaubs in Frankreich in dem kleinen verfallenen Städtchen St. Bertrand de Comminges zusammen mit seiner Gattin Marybel eine Kathedrale , um die dortigen Schätze zu dokumentieren. Am Ende des Tages bietet ihm der auffallend nervöse Küster an, ein altes Buch anzusehen, welches sich in seinem Besitz befindet. Es ist ein Folioband, der vor vielen Jahren vom einstigen Domherrn Albert de Mauleon zusammengestellt wurde und hauptsächlich aus Ausschnitten mittelalterlicher Manuskriptstücke besteht. Doch eine Zeichnung auf der letzten Seite fällt aus dem Rahmen: Sie beherbergt das erschreckend detailreiche Abbild einer nur allzu realistisch anmutenden Kreatur ...
