The third of the series. Doing jobs that an officer and a gentlemen wouldn't be caught dead doing has earned Marty the rank of Lieutenant at an early age. He is young, comes from peasant stock, and is dispensable. But more than all of that, he is willing. That makes him very useful to British Security, lead by William Wickham, the spymaster of Britain, and Admiral Hood (retired), who is secretly running the Navy's dirty jobs branch, The Special Operations Flotilla.
Add to that the love of his life Lady Caroline Candor, and Marty leads an exciting, deadly, and passionate life. Treachery in the Batavian Republic leads to an undercover operation deep in French territory with unexpected results. Back home, an unexpected development sees Marty and Caroline's relationship take a big step forward. Things develop on the home front until Marty is sent to South Africa to take care of a French sponsored pirate threat to the British East India Company. That leads him to India, and a link up with Arthur Wellesley.
It's explosive, passionate and exciting. What a life!

A good yarn but
Another good (schoolboy) story,which is a little too good to be true and goes at a hell of a pace. Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed it but I believe it would be much improved if it was more descriptive and filled about 10 to 12 hours of listening and therefore better value for 1 credit. Christopher’s books are only 6 hours long against many other Audible books at 12 to 14.
I hope you don’t find these comments too negative?
I wii continue to purchase all of his books in the future.

The plot thickens!
Another good story in this developing series, albeit rather improbable with the almost superhuman abilities of Marty this doesn’t detract from the adventures within. Shame the narrator has changed - it makes it sound like a last of the dinner wine version with odd accents and a strange effect applied when Marty is ‘thinking’. Not sure it would encourage me to listen to the next book I have to say.

A great story
I enjoyed this book and it’s a very easy listen with plenty of action and adventure. Well narrated too!
I’d not listened to the first books in the series but it’s really easy to pick up and get into.
Would definitely listen to more of the series!

Amazing!
All the hallmarks of a fantastic series. Boy rises from nothing to fame. Good character. Aristocracy. British humble beginnings. Realistic sea battles. He's a remarkable unbeaten fighter. Adventure. Historical fiction. I rate this with among the classic brilliant series.
