Nahr has been confined to the Cube: nine square metres of glossy grey cinderblock, devoid of time, its patterns of light and dark nothing to do with day and night. Journalists visit her, but get nowhere; because Nahr is not going to share her story with them.

The world outside calls Nahr a terrorist, and a whore; some might call her a revolutionary, or a hero. But the truth is, Nahr has always been many things, and had many names.

She was a girl who learned, early and painfully, that when you are a second class citizen love is a kind of desperation; she learned, above all else, to survive.

She was a girl who went to Palestine in the wrong shoes, and without looking for it found what she had always lacked in the basement of a battered beauty parlour: purpose, politics, friends. She found a dark-eyed man called Bilal, who taught her to resist; who tried to save her when it was already too late.

Nahr sits in the Cube, and tells her story to Bilal. Bilal, who isn’t there; Bilal, who may not even be alive, but who is her only reason to get out.

The narration is perfect, Susan’s voice is compelling, entrancing and magnetising in its truthful tone; listening is like being in the same room as the main character as she confides and shares every intricate detail of her extraordinary life which spans countries, politics, cultural identities and her growing up.
It is the most honest book I’ve ever read and is astounding in what it reveals of living life and the choices we make and why.
It is brilliantly written. Each sentence and thought so carefully crafted and rich with meaning. It is epic in its content, traversing and encompassing both the personal and the political throughout the book.
It gives so much insight into Palestinian culture, life under military occupation and the life of refugees. It is the best book I’ve ever read, it moved me deeply. It exposes so many issues of our time. I want everyone to listen to this amazing book. Please Susan, consider narrating your other books too, your voice is incredible at relaying your story - calm, honest and real.

I loved the varied portrayals of female relationships and their fluid, organic nature as time passes.

Searing, but timely.

Absolutely LOVED this book. Took me a while to get used to narrators voice and get into the story. But once I did I just couldn’t stop. Great writing. Offers a glimpse into life during war which many of us have been fortunate enough not to experience

So multi faceted

Wish we can call it fiction knowing it’s going on and on , beautiful story , beautifully written depiction a 70 year old tragedy

The unfairness towards Palestinians

Heartbreaking and life-affirming in equal measure, this is an exploration of loss and redemption set against the backdrop of a century of exile, dispossession and brutalisation of the Palestinian people. Told through the voice of an irrepressible woman and the vicissitudes that shape her, the book travels from Kuwait and Jordan to Palestine and is narrated from the dehumanised inside of an Israeli jail. An ode to Palestinian culture, the resilience of its women and men, as well as the emotions that keep us all alive. A gem.

Breathtakingly poetic
