Critic reviews

"I loved it! Dazzling observations and snarky one-liners, with a heroine who is vulnerable, funny, intelligent and feels So real. I wish I'd written it!" (Marian Keyes)

‘Confronting, heartbreaking and hilarious - a timely parable for modern anxiety as well as a timeless examination of men, women, sex, desire, friendship, family and the female psyche...I completely and utterly adored it." (Dolly Alderton)

"So funny, arch and tender...A must-read For anyone who has ever wondered what it means to be a daughter, a friend or a mother, when sometimes you don't even know how to be yourself." (Jessie Burton)

This is really confusing

It started off great, with a woman addicted to social media and her boyfriend calling her out on it, but then it jumps around in different time periods and loses the audience. i have no idea where she currently is! is she in the past or present?? it's so confusing. Completely lost.

On the plus side, the narrator is excellent, she fits the main character perfectly and does a great job at bringing the book alive.

Utterly brilliant

I was ready to not love this because I’m not a fan of Instagram ‘look at my life’ fakes but my god this blew me away. So witty, poignant and very, very clever. So many relationships are explored and exposed, so many lines made me laugh out loud and I found myself identifying with Jenny on more than a few occasions. Emma Jane Unsworth is utterly brilliant and the performance by the narrator was perfect.

Surprising

A 30 something in trendy London. Drawn into the vortex of social media until she loses her grip on what is real and important for her. Unconventional and a surprising ending. Loved the reader, just right for this character

Social media described to a T

One of the most exciting writers I've read in a long time. The story meanders in a real-life way, the characters are complex and whole and there is real wisdom here. The social media element is well-handled and I loved how all the minutiae of feelings are described with each post and like. The psychic mother character is incredible, I love her. Parts of the writing are achingly beautiful and feel like poetry. The writing is tight throughout and perfectly complemented by the narration.

50/50

I have to admit the first half of this book I couldn’t get into, the main character is not likeable at all. Being 33 myself I really couldn’t believe a 35 year old was still so obsessed with instagram or that self absorbed. I found myself rolling my eyes a lot!
But I preserved as the book had such good reviews and I’m glad I did But I wouldn’t recommend listening to the book. Many of the chapters are so short, so a lot made no sense to me. (Some chapters go back in time)
I didn’t even realise the chapters had titles as I didn’t find that clear at all. (Until about half way through when I just so happened to be looking at the app and it all made sense!)
I listened to the last chapter over and over but I still have no clue what the last word is. And I’m not sure how the first chapter fits in to the story either.
So I think I will have to purchase a copy and read the book, as I did enjoy the last half of the book when things came together but I did find that I predicted all of the ‘twists’.
I also really can’t believe after everything that has happened she still gives her ex the time of day!!

Kind of annoying

I think this book is supposed to be 'relatable' for people in their mid-30s navigating relationships, work and social media but the characters are all so unrealistic and annoying that I felt no sympathy for any of them. It starts off ok but becomes more ludicrous as it goes along, and I found myself rolling my eyes a lot. I did enjoy listening to a northern narrator for once though.

Think this book is more suited to print than audio

I found this book grating on me from the start, the characters are predictable and clichéd. There were really enjoyable parts but think it would be more suited to print than audio.

Loved it!

Moving story that had me in tears of joy & sadness wonderfully brought to life by Chloe Massey! I couldn’t put it down... well whatever the audio equivalent of that is!

Loved it!

Loved it! Emma Jane Unsworth is an absolute G. Fantastic narration too. Is the millennial Bridget Jones only sharper, more painful and with some great gags.
