About this listen

Russia is struggling to defeat Ukraine on the battlefield. But can it win the war for influence?

August 2022. Simon Sharman is out for revenge, pursuing the assassin of his former colleague across war-torn Ukraine. Back in London, a Russian spy ring at the heart of the British Establishment remains active, attempting to sabotage the West's support for Ukraine.

In the fiercely contested Donbas region, Simon finds himself sucked into a terrifying shadow conflict between Russia and the West. Can a lone spy make a difference to the course of a conflict?

Brilliantly read and characterised by David Thorpe.

The story is all too believable and unbelievable in the unbelievable and sadly believable world we live in today.

Perhaps it has always been like this, but we were shielded from the reality of warfare and lust for power and wealth.

There seems to be no right or wrong, just a bit of luck now and again helped along by a quest for survival over justice and integrity.

And the risk of being a bit of a spoiler, though the story is a very enjoyable and informative listen, it does leave me disconsolate as to the present and whatever future there is.

Contemporary and scary

A fantastic follow up to A Spy Alone. Keeps the tension and intrigue going and sets things up for the next instalment. I love the way the story weaves in and out of actual events which makes it feel even more relevant. Eagerly awaiting the next book

Brilliant!

First time i have written a review. I shall keep it short. One of the best spy thrillers i have listened to. Performance, story, everything. Very good.

Very Very Good

Really confusing structure and story. Hated the accent work and found the whole book worn down by sense of its own importance. I returned it after an hour.

Over rated and over acted

Have particularly liked the way the relationship between Simon and Sarah develops. Unlike the first book, where there was an introduction to the basics of spy craft, this book gets us deeper into the geopolitics and the connection between spies, the civil service, and the reality of the 21st century realpolitik I enjoyed the writing and the pacing and The overall mood of the book. I’d highly recommend it to anyone interested in books in the vein of LeCarre.

A fantastic sequel

Having previously read books by Andrew H and Robert H I think I have been spoiled as they set a high bar. I found the story of this book very contemporary but not riveting. On Chapter 40 I nearly bailed out but continued.

Not a page turner

One of the very few books I gave up on because of the cheery narration. Wholly inappropriate for a thriller.

Narration.
