About this listen
What if Cinderella had been sent to kill the prince?
Kayden never thought of herself as the belle of the ball, but she finds herself in the royal palace, surrounded by society darlings - and the only thing she has in common with them is that they're all vying for the prince. They're after his crown. She's after his head.
Her mission was simple - get close to the prince, and kill him.
Kayden entered the palace under a lie, one designed to get her close to the prince. On the outside, she may look like a princess, but beneath the mask, a killer lays in wait - for the perfect moment.
Dvarius was not ready to take the crown, nor was he ready for a wife. But due to his father’s unexpected death and an archaic law, he must find a bride before he is allowed to take his rightful place on the throne.
And the one woman he wants - just might be the one who is there to kill him.
©2015 JC Morrows (P)2019 JC MorrowsKayden has entered the palace under false pretences designed to get her close to Prince Dvarius. As one of 25 potential candidates vying to marry the next in line to the throne, Kayden’s mission is simple; get close to the Prince and kill him. She may look like a princess on the outside, but beneath the mask, a killer lays in wait for the perfect moment.
Prince Dvarius is not ready to take on the crown or a wife. Due to his father’s unexpected death and an archaic law, however, he must find a bride before he is allowed to take his rightful place on the throne. Unfortunately, the one woman he wants just might be the one who is there to kill him…
The Reluctant Assassin is the first instalment of the Order of the Moonstone series. Set in the fictional country Auralias, which is ruled by the Fortune family, the plot centres around a 17-year-old street urchin-turned-assassin who is selected by the Order of the Moonstone to kill the Crown Prince. Dvarius is nothing how she expected however and before long she finds herself conflicted between her duty to the Order and her developing feelings for the Prince.
Initially, I was drawn to the cover and the premise of the story which hinted at secret identities, hidden agendas and intrigue. Instead, the book turned out to be an insta-love story between a Prince and a potential candidate out of 25 hopefuls with who he instantly becomes smitten and vice versa.
From the offset, I felt as though I had stumbled into the second book of the series rather than the first. This was mainly due to the focus on characterisation and the lack of world-building. While it’s insinuated that the book is set in a dystopian version of America, there’s a distinctively medieval feel to the book that suggests otherwise. Little information was given on who The Order was or why they wanted to kill the Prince in the first place. Hopefully, the next instalment will focus more on their agenda as well as Kayden’s background and how she came to join the Order in the first place.
I received an advanced free audible copy of The Reluctant Assassin and I am voluntarily reviewing it. Krys Janae’s narration was warm, clear and concise with excellent pacing.
Recommended to Teen/YA fans of Fantasy/Dystopian, action/adventure, secret societies, hidden agendas, mystery, insta-love, The Selection etc

Reluctant or not, if a person is an assassin, surely they have to have a ruthless streak, or nobody would hire them for any mission, especially one where the target is a person of power and influence You’d think for an assassin, having a shred of ruthlessness would be part of the job description.
It was also rather overly religious for me. While reading one of the later sections of the book, I felt like I was reading a sermon.
In summary, if you are very religious, you might enjoy this. If you aren’t, I recommend you avoid it.
Disappointing
