About this listen

Posing as an escaping Nazi war-criminal Bernie Gunther arrives in Buenos Aires and, having revealed his real identity to the local chief of police, discovers that his reputation as a detective goes before him.

A young girl has been murdered in peculiarly gruesome circumstances that strongly resemble Bernie's final case as a homicide detective with the Berlin police. A case he had failed to solve.

Circumstances lead the chief of police in Buenos Aires to suppose that the murderer may be one of several thousand ex Nazis who have fetched up in Argentina since 1945. And, therefore, who better than Bernie Gunther to help him track that murderer down?

A slow burner from Günter. Top class

I’m biased cause I love the Günter series but this is a fascinating dual storey about Berlin and Argentina. Well recommended

No Jeff Harding, no problem.

Skeptical at first as it wasn’t Jeff Harding narrating but after 20minutes I needn’t have worried. Outstanding.

Gritty

An enjoyable listen indeed .Jonathan‘s voice is well suited to the grime and seedier side of the story, the tones for the female parts involved a bit of suspension of belief, but overall great stuff.

Cockneys in Germany?

This is the first Philip Kerr book I have listened to with this particular narrator. He was terrible. I have listened to others in the series with John Herr, and he is much better with accents. This narrator can’t do a German accent to save his life, nor can he do anything remotely close to Argentinian. His Gunther is a bizarre mix of some undefinable accent with a gravelly overlay I’d associate with The Marlboro Man. There is none of the world-weariness, noir quality, or suave irony of Herr’s Gunther. Further, most of the other policemen, especially the underlings are voiced in a bewildering Cockney. It was like listening to street urchins out of Oliver Twist. Ruined the whole novel; I ended up, ditching the narration and reading instead. What a waste of money and I bet that if Kerr were still alive, he wouldn’t stand for this. Never going to buy another audiobook in this series, which is too bad. I love listening to Herr.

Great story

Narrator’s gravely voice grated to start with and I thought it would make it unreadable, but eventually got used to it. Excellent story, hope I’ll enjoy the others in the series
