About this listen

From the hugely popular 44 Scotland Street series comes the latest adventures of Bertie and his family and friends.

The winds of change are blowing through Scotland Street. Though Bertie is getting older, he can't resist an adventure to escape his domineering mother, and Bruce, ever the navel-gazer, will have to bring his best self to navigate the complexities of the pas de deux. While Alexander McCall Smith's delightfully warm and witty comedy takes some surprising turns, the improbable adventures of this quirky cast of Scots will affirm the heart and joy in Edinburgh's New Town.

I enjoyed this gentle, humorous and beautifully read update on old friends as much and more than the others I have read or listened to. Thank you!

Another delightful listen!

Another winner 🥇. He gets the balance right, not too much of the insufferable Irene and Bruce, enough of the most likeable Stuart, Nicola, Bertie, Matthew, Elspeth, James etc. David Rintoul narrates wonderfully as usual.

Loved it!

A welcome update on events in Scotland Street. This whimsical, amusing chronicle of Édimbourgeoisie is brilliantly narrated by David Rintoul with appropriate local accents and just the right intonation in talking of other Scots cities and other nations.

I love this series of gentle yet thought provoking stories mixed with humour, pathos and normality and always buy a hard copy. However, before embarking in my own read I like to listen to David Rentoul’s perfect interpretation of the characters of Scotland Street just to set the tone. Just wonderful!

Book and narrator in perfect harmony for me.

As usual - excellent narration by David Rintoul. The story was just OK, but it is the narration and the familiarity of Scottish places which really make this a wonderful experience. Glad to hear Bertie getting a better deal in life at last! I have listened to all the 44 Scotland Street books and if wasn’t for David Rintoul I think I would likely give it a miss now, Come on Sandy - this isn’t Coronation Street - time to get a move on with more joined up story line. Where is Pat - just disappeared to Paris? How did James react to the news? Glad Katy is gone as I was tiring of the poetry. And really - surely after all this time the crushed raspberry corduroy dungarees would be much to small for Bertie!?

Excellent narration!

Alexander McCall has a great talent for taking the ordinary and turning it into something interesting.
I have enjoyed all the books in this series and will be sad when it finishes and I have to say goodbye to the people whose lives I have followed with great enjoyment especially Angus and Bertie.
David Rintoul reading makes the characters come alive and he is easy to listen to.

I would recommend this book and the series to anyone interested in ordinary lives such a change from murder and mayhem.

A lovely read

I love Scotland Street novels. Alexander has fantastic blend in his novels. The narrator is brilliant. I have bypassed some good books because I
don't like their voice.

Thoughly addicted

I sometimes listen to a chapter twice or three times
I adore this series of books
Twists and turns of normality which we all have around us, but perhaps never see.
